Jewellery Remodelling: How I Transformed a Sentimental Ring into a Pendant Necklace

I was recently approached by a client with a very special commission. She had been entrusted with her mother-in-law’s heirloom three-stone engagement ring, with the plan of dismantling it so that each of the three daughters-in-law could receive one of the old cut diamonds.

As the first to receive the ring, my client had the privilege of choosing her stone before the others. The diamonds were absolutely stunning — the centre stone was a substantial 1.5 carats, flanked by two beautiful 0.75 carat stones.

You might assume that the largest diamond would be the natural choice. However, after she explained that she was hoping to create a simple, elegant pendant, I suggested that the centre stone might be too large for a necklace and would actually look better set in a bold solitaire ring instead.

After discussing her options, she thoughtfully chose one of the flanking stones, a beautifully proportioned old cut diamond. Perfect for a minimalist rubover setting.

Before: The Original Engagement Ring

In Progress: Deconstruction

After: The Finished Pendant

The result is a classic rubover-set diamond pendant, designed to be worn every day. The sleek bezel setting complements the antique cut of the stone beautifully, allowing it to shine while staying secure and low-profile.

My client is thrilled with how the piece turned out. A fresh new chapter for a meaningful family heirloom.
